Complete Cooperage Solutions: Barrel Bending Press, Surface Planer, Hoop Bending Machine & Hoop Remover
High-performance barrel making and reconditioning equipment: barrel bending press, surface planer, air compressor, hoop bending machine, and hoop remover. Ideal for cooperages and barrel repair shops.
Essential Machinery for Barrel Manufacturing and Reconditioning
Producing high-quality wooden barrels — whether for wine, whiskey, bourbon, or craft beer — requires precision forming, smooth surfacing, and reliable hoop handling. Similarly, barrel reconditioning depends on efficient hoop removal and replacement.
At Wolin, we supply a complete range of cooperage equipment designed for both new barrel production and used barrel refurbishment. Below we cover five core machines that form the backbone of any barrel workshop.
- Barrel Bending Press
The barrel bending press is the heart of barrel shaping. After staves are assembled with temporary hoops, the press applies uniform radial pressure to form the classic barrel bulge (bilge). Wolin’s barrel bending press features hydraulic control, adjustable dwell time, and interchangeable molds for different barrel sizes (e.g., 200L, 225L, 500L). This machine ensures consistent curvature and leak-proof stave joints. - Surface Planer
Before staves can be bent, they must be perfectly flat and smooth. Our surface planer processes both the inner and outer faces of staves, removing saw marks and creating precise thickness tolerances (typically ±0.5mm). A quality surface planer reduces barrel failure rates and improves toasting and charring uniformity. It is equally essential for planing reconditioned staves. - Air Compressor
While often overlooked, a reliable air compressor powers many pneumatic components in a cooperage: clamping cylinders, hoop driving tools, sanding equipment, and dust removal systems. Wolin recommends oil-free or low-oil air compressors with adequate tank capacity to ensure continuous operation of your barrel bending press and hoop machinery. - Hoop Bending Machine
Barrel hoops (steel or stainless steel) must be perfectly round and tensioned. The hoop bending machine rolls flat bar stock into circular hoops of specified diameters (chime, bilge, and quarter hoops). Our hoop bending machine features adjustable rollers, automatic cut-off, and a welding positioner. It produces consistent hoops for new barrels or replacement hoops for reconditioned barrels. - Hoop Remover
When reconditioning used barrels, the first step is removing old, corroded, or damaged hoops. The hoop remover is a pneumatic or hydraulic tool that spreads hoop ends apart without damaging staves. Unlike manual hammering, a hoop remover preserves stave integrity and speeds up disassembly. It is a must-have for any used barrel layer removal and reconditioning line.
How These Machines Work Together in a Cooperage
A typical workflow for new barrel production includes:
Surface planer – prepares raw staves
Barrel bending press – shapes staves into a barrel body
Hoop bending machine – produces hoops
Air compressor – powers clamping and driving tools
Hoop remover – used mainly for reconditioning (not new barrels)
For used barrel reconditioning, the process reverses:
Hoop remover → removes old hoops
Surface planer → re-surfaces inner/outer wood
Hoop bending machine → makes new hoops
Barrel bending press (occasionally) – re-shapes loose barrels
Air compressor – powers all pneumatic tools
